Frequently Asked Split System Questions

Yes. Under the Building Regulations 2012, a WA home must have working, mains-powered smoke alarms that are less than 10 years old before it changes ownership or is offered for rent or hire. Battery-only alarms do not meet the requirement for a sale or a lease, and this has applied to existing homes since 1 October 2009.

No. Only a licensed electrical contractor can connect or disconnect a mains-powered smoke alarm in WA. You may replace an accessible battery yourself, but any 240V work must be done by a licensed electrician, who then issues an electrical safety certificate.

If your home was built on a building permit applied for on or after 1 May 2015 and needs more than one alarm, they must be interconnected so that when one sounds, they all sound. Older homes are not required to interconnect when sold or rented, though we still recommend it because it wakes everyone no matter where a fire starts.

Yes. After any hard-wired smoke alarm work we supply an electrical safety certificate for the work carried out, which your settlement agent, property manager or records may need. In WA a licensed contractor must issue this within 28 days of the work.
